Peden spot kick ensures Ports knock fizz out of Coagh United

Taylor’s men were the only local side in Championship Two to register a win. Near neighbours, Glebe and Ballymoney both failed to collect points. Glebe were beaten 3-1 by Sport and Leisure, whilst Ballymoney United suffered a 5-3 defeat against Annagh United. Ballymoney had three players sent off whilst there were eight yellow cards dished out in the tie at the Joey Dunlop Centre. Portstewart had all the play at Hagan Park, and had numerous chances in front of goal. Ryan Doherty, Lee Forgrave, Johnny Stewart, Robert Donnell and David McClements couldn’t beat Coagh keeper Hasson. Assitant Manager, Aaron Forgrave praised his team for on a ‘fine display’ and said that they were just ‘unlucky’ in front of goal. “We had about five one-on-ones with the keeper, and he did very well. “The boys started to get a bit frustrated because they were creating so many chances and not getting any reward,” said Forgrave. The break through came mid way through the second half after Ryan Doherty was upended in the box. The ever-reliable James Peden stepped up to the spot and made no mistake to hit home past Hasson. At the other end, Coagh didn’t test the Portstewart defence, and keeper Madison had little to do. “They had a few long range efforts,” recalled Forgrave, “but we weren’t put under any pressure.” The Seasiders face the long trip to Portadown this Saturday, where they will meet Annagh United. “Annagh took the points in the first meeting,” said Forgrave. “They are a good side, there is very little between the teams in this League, every game is a hard game, and you cannot afford to take anything for granted. We are without Nigel Turner, Stuart Millar and possibly Richard Vauls for Saturday. Richard got a knock on his foot, so it’ll be a wait-and-see on him this week. “Myself and Gary were really pleased with Saturday’s performance. We played some good football and passed the ball around well, we created plenty of chances, and had we had a bit of luck on our side it could’ve been a bigger scoreline.” Former Linfield boss David Jeffries was a guest of Coagh United for the tie. “David spoke to a few of our players after the game and said how impressed he was with our play.
